With Everything

A few years ago Hillsong United released a great worship song called With Everything.  As I was listening and worshiping yesterday morning, Holy Spirit prompted me to consider how rare it is for me to do anything “with everything”. Specifically though, he asked me how often do I love God, or trust God, or worship God, or believe God WITH EVERYTHING?

Scripture commands us to “Love the Lord your God will all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)  If I truly love God with all, then that leaves nothing for me to give to anything else.  Which is how I think that God wants it.  Give me your all He says, and then watch as my strength and Spirit flow though you to touch everything around you.

I think that this is why his command concerning our neighbors is so simple.  “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39).  In other words, simply desire for your neighbors the same instinctual benefits that you desire for yourself, and God will be pleased.  Just do for your neighbors as you would do for yourself, AFTER loving me with all that you are and have.

My desire for today is an awareness of the ways in which I hold back, giving God some, perhaps most, but not everything.  The moments of hesitancy when I allow others opinions to govern my responses.  The places where fear becomes a greater motivation than love.  The opportunities that I allow to pass because I doubt that God is truly working in me.  The times where my embarrassment overwhelms my desire to worship the only one worthy of passionate and intense devotion.

I desire an awareness so that I may offer this brokenness to God and see as he works in it and through it to change me, and the world around me.

So that at the end of this day, God will have a little more of my everything.
